Beth Woodger

I became a midwife to support women and families through the single most important journey that we can experience in our life.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A MIDWIFE?

Because I wanted to give continuity of care to women that builds a trust and rapport which enables women to feel at the forefront of their pregnancy experience and supports them in giving birth the way they feel is right for them.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE INDEPENDENT MIDWIFERY?

I became tired of not being able to provide the individualised care needed in midwifery and hated not being able to see women through the whole of their pregnancy, birth and postnatal journey within my previous NHS role. My own pregnancy and birth journey fuelled my need to become an IM and made me even more passionate about providing individualised care.

DO YOU EVER FEEL ISOLATED IN YOUR WORK?

Never – although I mostly work alone, I have many other amazing IM’s from IMUK available at the end of the phone for support, night and day!

WHERE IS YOUR ‘PATCH’?

I live in Suffolk, but I care for families in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridge.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PART(S) OF BEING AN INDEPENDENT MIDWIFE?

Getting to know women and their families well. I love being able to turn up at a birth and just giving a smile and a hug and settling myself in a corner, knowing that we have built that relationship and bond of support antenatally to make the woman feel supported and at ease.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY AROUND PREGNANCY AND BIRTH?

Always trust your gut instinct. Women know their bodies and their babies the best.

How do you see your role during a birth?

Sitting in a corner, quietly observing, with my crochet!! I’m there to support you as much as you need, but essentially the less that I’m saying and doing, the better.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A BUSINESS OWNER?

Keeping on top of my admin, I do keep everything extremely well organised, but I procrastinate and can often find myself a much more fun job than admin!!!

DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR BIRTHING WOMEN?

Invest in yourself, your birthing experience and your baby. Whether that it loaning books from your local library and reading as much as you can, or hiring and IM for individualised support throughout your experience.

You and your baby are totally worth it.
