what we do

Protecting independence, for all midwives

Independent midwifery is a cornerstone of the midwifery profession and gave rise to the innovations of one-to-one care, team midwifery and women-centred care.

Over the years, independent practice has greatly contributed to the range of maternity options within the UK and enabled a great deal of valuable learning and experience benefitting the profession and UK maternity care as a whole. The way a midwife is enabled to work affects all midwives, not only those working independently right now.

Connecting, Supporting and Knowledge sharing

IMUK is first and foremost a membership association for independent practitioners. We’re here to support and connect our members, to protect and promote their work and to enable birthing families to locate their closest practitioners.

But we’re also here for our NHS colleagues and the midwives of the future, to provide information about independent practice and share clinical learnings with our professional colleagues.

the benefits of joining imuk

Joining IMUK connects you to a UK wide network of independent midwifery professionals with one being your own mentor, who will support you with unrivalled clinical knowledge and experience.

You’ll also be supporting our work to ensure that autonomous practice continues for the midwives and families of the future.

"I never feel I am practising alone, I have found my “Tribe”. I know I can call upon my IMUK colleagues day or night"
Amanda Garside, Independent Midwife
