Jasmine Jonah

I became a midwife because I’ve always been passionate about supporting women during one of the most transformative times in their lives.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A MIDWIFE?

Pregnancy, birth and postnatal period are incredibly powerful experiences, and I wanted to be someone who could guide, reassure and advocate for women through that journey. Supporting women to feel confident, informed and safe during pregnancy and birth is something I feel deeply called to do.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE INDEPENDENT MIDWIFERY?

Independent midwifery allows me to care for women in a more personalised and holistic way. I can spend the time truly getting to know each woman and her family, understanding their wishes and supporting them throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Continuity of care is so important, and independent practice accommodates me to offer that consistent support.

DO YOU EVER FEEL ISOLATED IN YOUR WORK?

Working independently can sometimes feel different from being part of a large team, but it also allows for deeper connections with the women and families I support. I’m also part of a wider community of independent midwives who support each other, share knowledge and work collaboratively when needed.

WHERE IS YOUR ‘PATCH’?

My work focuses on supporting women and families in London and the surrounding areas of the M25. I aim to make my care accessible while still offering the personalised support that independent midwifery is known for.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PART(S) OF BEING AN INDEPENDENT MIDWIFE?

The best part is building meaningful relationships with the families I support. Being able to walk alongside a woman throughout her pregnancy, and seeing her transition into motherhood is incredibly special. That continuity of care makes such a difference to a woman’s experience.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY AROUND PREGNANCY AND BIRTH?

I believe pregnancy and birth are normal, physiological processes that deserve respect, support and trust. My philosophy is centred around empowering women with knowledge, helping them feel confident in their bodies, and ensuring they feel heard and supported in their choices.

How do you see your role during a birth?

My role is to provide calm, skilled support while creating a safe and reassuring environment for the woman and her family. I’m there to guide, advocate, monitor wellbeing and protect the birth space so that the woman can focus on her body and her baby.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A BUSINESS OWNER?

One of the challenges is balancing the clinical work I love with the business side of things. Building awareness of your services and reaching the women who need your support takes time and consistency.

DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR BIRTHING WOMEN?

Trust your body and trust yourself. Pregnancy and birth are powerful experiences, and every woman deserves to feel informed, respected and supported throughout that journey. Surround yourself with people who listen to you and honour your choices
