IMUK Making the Move Workshop

Last week saw the successful running of the eighth IMUK ‘Making the Move’ Workshop. These workshops, facilitated by Liz Nightingale, are run to inform and educate qualified and student midwives considering becoming independent midwives and starting their own businesses .

The day was informal but informative. The session offered the opportunity to meet established independent midwives for support and guidance, as well as plenty of time for those attending to ask questions about setting up in independent midwifery practice. They could also join Independent Midwives UK on the day if they chose. Attendees were provided with an information pack and Making the Move Handbook including useful links to further information and an Attendance Certificate. A wide range of topics were covered, such as how to start your own business, marketing and publicity to access potential clients, and independent midwifery and the law.

IMUK Membership Secretary Annie Robertson attended to offer her services and and Heather Berry was kind enough to explore Supervision and setting up in business with the group. The experienced Independent Midwives who attended spoke about their experiences in independent practice, so the day was peppered with interesting birth and other stories. Sarah Ifill dropped in at lunchtime to chat to group members, along with a former client of Liz’s with her baby, so attendees could talk to her about what having an independent midwife was like and why she chose this.
Feedback following the workshop was very positive, with most of the attendees coming away feeling more confident about proceeding with an independent career in the future.
