Sam Jones
WHY DID YOU BECOME A MIDWIFE?
Because I wanted to give continuity of care to women that builds a trust and rapport which enables women to feel at the forefront of their pregnancy experience and supports them in giving birth the way they feel is right for them.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE INDEPENDENT MIDWIFERY?
Because I want to be able to provide more time and information to women and their families to support them through their journey to parenthood.
DO YOU EVER FEEL ISOLATED IN YOUR WORK?
Yes, within NHS as often I do a lot of work that complements and enhances care that our current medicalised system doesn’t acknowledge or utilise. This work uses complementary therapies and this aspect of my work can enhance care and outcomes significantly.
WHERE IS YOUR ‘PATCH’?
North wales Bangor to Wrexham.
WHAT ARE THE BEST PART(S) OF BEING AN INDEPENDENT MIDWIFE?
The ability to really get to know the families I look after. To advocate their choices and support their decisions through information and evidence-based practice which is individualised.
WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY AROUND PREGNANCY AND BIRTH?
Yes my philosophy is safety first, enveloped in trust. I believe that childbirth is a natural, physiological process, and my role is to support this journey by fostering a deep sense of trust in a woman’s body and her ability to give birth. I prioritise creating a safe, calm environment where women feel secure, heard, and respected at every stage of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Safety, to me, goes beyond the physi-cal aspects of care; it encompasses emotional, mental, and psychological well-being. I use my clinical expertise to ensure that the highest standards of care are maintained, while also empowering women to make informed decisions that align with their individual needs and values. By building a trusting relationship and offering continuous, compassionate support, I aim to guide women through this transforma-tive time with confidence and security, promoting a birth experience that is both empowering and safe.
ONE THING YOU WISH SOMEONE TOLD YOU BEFORE YOU BECOME AN INDEPENDENT MIDWIFE?
How it can give me a work model that conjoins my professional values with the needs of women which surpasses their expectations. In addition how it can foster respectful working relationships that support women and birth outcomes which respect a woman’s body through pregnancy, during birth and in the postnatal period. And the level of care I feel is what I want to provide (especially postnatally and with breastfeeding for those women who feel this is a fundamental part of their experience) has been transformative for me!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A BUSINESS OWNER?
Having to wear all the hats and not having an admin team. However, as I was previous Personal Assistant I didn’t find this as difficult as the actual exchange of money.
DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR BIRTHING WOMEN?
If you’re looking for someone to truly support and listen to you during your pregnancy and birth, I’m here for you. As an independent midwife, I’ll be by your side, making sure you feel confident and safe every step of the way. Whether you’re planning a natural birth or are under the care of a consultant, I’ll help you navigate the process, ensuring you understand all the information and feel empowered to make the choices that are right for you. If you’re under consultant care, I can attend appointments with you, explain the medical details in a way that makes sense, and advocate for your decisions so you feel fully supported. My goal is to make sure you feel heard and in control throughout your journey, and that together, we create a birth plan that’s safe and truly yours. I’ll be with you every step of the way, offering care and reassurance, so you can approach your birth with trust and confidence.
